What is Blood Donation ?

Blood donation is a noble deed in which one human being donates. His/her blood to save other human lives.

Why is Blood Needed ?

  • To replace blood lost due to accidents or disease.
  • For patients suffering from anaemia i.e. low Hb.
  • For major and minor surgeries including open heart surgery, organ transplant etc.
  • During child birth for the mother.
  • For exchange transfusion in new born infants.
  • For children suffering from ailments like thalassemia, hemophilia, leukeamia etc.
  • For burn victims.
  • For patients of dengue fever.
  • To make blood derivatives those are used to treat medical problems.

Why is it Important to Donate Blood ?

Every day someone somewhere is in need of blood. Blood may be needed for surgery, for an accident victim, or for patients with leukemia, cancer, heart and liver diseases & hemophilia. Your contribution can help save lives!

Am i eligible to Donate Blood ?

Yes,

  • You can be blood donor if you :
  • Are between 18-65 years of age.
  • Weight above 45 kg and in good health.
  • Your hemoglobin is minimum 12.0 gm/dl

Is Donating Blood Safe ?

Blood donation is a safe process worldwide. The blood center uses a specialized blood pack unit with a pre - attached needle to collect your blood. This bag is used only once and discarded, eliminating any chances of spread of infection.

How often can one Donate Blood ?

Your body can replenish the donated blood volume within 24-48 hours. As per guideline, the interval between two blood donations should be at least 12 weeks (90 days) for male and 120 days for female.

How long does it take to Donate Blood?

Typically, the actual blood collection takes only 8-12 minutes. The entire donation process includes registration, medical screening, the blood collection and time for refreshments.

Can i donate blood during my Pregnancy?

No, you cannot donate during pregnancy and for 12 months after full term delivery and also during lactation. Menstruation in itself is a cause for deferral.

How Much Blood is collected?

The body starts compensating the donate volume immediately after donation. The total blood volume in the human body is between 4.5-5 litres out of which only 350 ml is collected for whole blood if you weight 45 kg to 55kg (or) 450 ml of blood if you weigh more than 55 kg. This certainly will not make you weak. You might feel better, more relaxed and certainly pleased at having done something so wonderful in such a short time.

Do i become weak / fatigued?

Not, at all. You can resume your normal work after donation. There is no loss of energy / vitality. In fact one feels better.

Will my body suffer if i Donate Blood?

Doctors would not take blood if it was not safe to donate. You donate between 350 to 400 ml which is less than 1/20th of the total volume of blood in the body. Your body keeps making new blood all time whether you donate or not. Within 24 to 36 hours the volume donate is restored. It takes a little longer for new cells to be formed.

A donation of blood takes only 8-12 minutes. You can donate at any government / private blood bank in your locality, you are most welcome at this center for blood donation.
